What is Aluminium Tooling?

Aluminium tooling made for sustained quality in lost wax investment casting.

Whether utilised for short runs or high-volume projects, Newby Foundries Investment Casting’s aluminium tooling provides a durable cavity to shape sacrificial wax injected patterns for casting.

Newby Foundries Investment Casting works with several grades of steel, duplex, nickel, Iron, Aluminium, bronze and brass alloys. We can produce components in a range of weights from grams to 75kg, with wax injection machines on site for patterns and soluble wax.

The tools can be designed to go on automatic and manual wax injection machines, with many incorporating inserts and slides to make more complicated shapes.

Newby Foundries’ die tooling is made to the highest quality standard with our assured and secure partners in the UK to ISO 9001 accreditation.

High Accuracy & Low Wear

There are many benefits to using aluminium tooling in lost wax investment casting processes.

Aluminium tooling facilitates exacting dimensional control and good accuracy of tolerances since no draft angle is required. The thermal properties of the aluminium tooling allow the heat of the wax to be dissipated, supporting continuous non-interrupted manufacturing as well as dimensional stability and improved cycle times.

As a non-abrasive process, it also enables durability over repeated multiple batches. Tooling can take form as numerous cavities and is regularly able to produce 10,000 shots before refurbishment of bushes and injection points.

They provide an excellent surface finish for the wax to 1.6Ra which is better than the process can achieve.

Tooling is further storable and will not degrade over time. It’s suitable for projects that are ordered in frequently ; at the start of a die casting or forging project to accelerate production ; pick up when tooling is under service or end of project when into spares and repairs status.

Tooling Production and Modification

Aluminium tools are easy to machine and we are happy to incorporate tool modifications where required. We can further add logos, parts IDs and labels with slides and retracting sections ; manufacturing from brass where necessary to maintain wear properties.

Refurbishment of tools is a more cost-effective process than initial layouts and can usually be completed within weeks when required.

Newby Foundries’ continued investment into our processes and capabilities ensures the flexibility to meet demand, whether one off products or large batches.

We can also offer resin tooling and silicone tooling when aluminium is not appropriate on batch size or costs. Our skilled engineers will advise accordingly.
