What is Printed Wax Patterns?

Newby Foundries utilises the latest 3D printing technology to produce wax patterns for lost wax Investment Casting.

Our 3D printing capabilities support project managers seeking a cost-effective process to review and test designs, prior to committing to hard tooling a mass production.

3D printing is a beneficial alternative to more traditional machining processes, saving material, time and cost. Plus, with no tooling required, it allows for reduced lead times.

Throughout this, quality is maintained at the highest standard, producing a good surface finish using printed wax patterns of 3.2Ra and enhanced by our polishing capabilities.

This service is suitable for a range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as a range of casting quantities and sizes produced up to 280mm x 280mm x 180mm as standard and larger with some assembly.

Our Process

Patterns are printed using customer CAD files in layers to form the full body.

Though we do advise that the build layers can be seen on the surface of the casting, we take great care on how the build is formed to reduce this.

With the build being completely flexible, Newby Foundries can produce complex shapes that would normally be manufactured using complex soluble patterns or ceramic cores. This allows us to manufacture parts that cannot be achieved by machining.

The 3D pattern follows the same process that would be used from a hard tool, giving greater confidence in transfer to production and assurance of mechanical performance. This produces highly accurate and quality castings which can be further enhanced with Newby Foundries’ in-house machining capabilities.

As a sacrificial pattern, it is recommended for one off and low volume projects. Our highly skilled and experienced teams can advise on the right process for your casting requirements.
